Types of Therapies

One Degree Therapy utilizes a broad suite of counselling practices, techniques and experience to help adults, teens and families:

CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aims to help people become aware of when they make negative interpretations, and of behavioral patterns which reinforce the distorted thinking.   CBT helps people to develop alternative ways of thinking and behaving which aims to reduce their distress.

DBT – Dialectical Behaviour Therapy provides skills for managing intense emotions and negotiating social relationships.  DBT focuses on developing skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness.  It is continually aimed at balancing opposing forces and investigating the truth of powerful negative emotions.

EFT – Emotion-Focused Therapy is is a whole-person approach that takes every aspect of the individual into account, instead of just their dysfunction. EFT was founded on the concept that emotional change is pivotal to generating enduring change.  It focuses on helping people understand their emotions, so they can recognize how those emotions affect their behaviors and experiences in the world.

EFFT – Emotion-Focused Family Therapy provides a practical approach to engaging families at an emotional level. Accessing, processing, and connecting family members through the power of emotional experience promotes healing and fosters a family’s resilience to the everyday and unexpected challenges of life. The principle goal of EFFT is to re-establish more secure family patterns where attachment and caregiving responses are effective and emotional bonds are repaired.

ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy where clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions. ACT emphasizes acceptance as a way to deal with negative thoughts, feelings, symptoms, or circumstances.  It also encourages increased commitment to healthy, constructive activities that uphold your values or goals.

SFBT – Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a strength-based approach to psychotherapy based on solution-building rather than problem-solving. Unlike other forms of psychotherapy that focus on present problems and past causes, SFBT concentrates on your current circumstances and future hope.

Attachment Theory focuses on relationships and bonds (particularly long-term) between people, including those between a parent and child and between romantic partners.

Mindfulness-based approach is conscious awareness of our present moment. This includes openness and non-judgment about the experience.  At One Degree Therapy we combine a mindfulness-based approach in partnership with our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) therapies.
